Edward’s was an important name in twentieth-century American pipe making, producing both tobacco and pipes while aspiring to become an “American Charatan.” Although some Edward’s pipes were sourced from outside manufacturers, the company also operated its own production and helped advance the emerging American freehand tradition.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Edward’s became especially associated with oil-cured Algerian briar and lightly applied finishes that allowed the wood’s natural grain to remain prominent. The company employed several pipe makers over the years, including Randy Wiley, who later became one of the best-known figures in American pipe making. However, we only attribute an individual pipe to Wiley when there is supporting evidence.
MBSD’s Edward’s selection includes traditional tobacco pipe shapes, oversized briars, paneled designs, and American freehands. Many arrive through estate collections and our trade-in program, with nomenclature, materials, shaping, and construction providing clues to their production period.
