HS Studio Sandblasted Squat Rhodesian w/ Horn Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.

The like its close cousin, the bulldog, Rhodesian is simultaneously a very particular shape, with clearly defined lines, and also one that has ben re-interpreted again and again in drastically different ways. Coming up with a novel rendition is, therefore, quite a challenge. This one, from HS Studio, is impressive, not least in its unique approach to the form. Combining a squat, bullcap-like breadth with a slightly backwards-canted figure (not entirely unlike the “Chopper” shape by Grechukhin), the stummel alone is already very interesting. The horn ferrule, crisp sandblast, and a flared ebonite stem only add to what is already a delightfully distinctive design.

This pipe is unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
