At MBSD we sell a lot of high-grade, high-quality pipes from various iconic makes, but the pipes we’re most proud of are our meerschaums. Right from the beginning, we wanted to offer the best smoking meers on the market, and to do this, we had them made with two distinct features. First, we made sure that they were made with block meerschaum that was carefully selected to be the most lightweight, pure, and porous available, meaning it would also color more quickly and evenly as it is smoked. Second, for our Deluxe meerschaums, we had the pipes made with a patented Briar-Mortise system that is closer to the stem connection on a briar pipe than a standard meerschaum. This is because, on our Deluxe models, the mortise is made from briar itself, while the tenons used are made from Delrin. This allows for more precision construction of the pipe’s draft hole, as well as a general extra durability and longevity.

The 20th century featured a variety of innovations in the engineering of smoking pipes, especially when it came to keeping the smoke itself cool, dry, and free from impurities. Stems with upward-facing buttons, such as Peterson’s P-lip, or later, similar designs by WDC, Hilson, and Savinelli, helped orient smoke away from the tongue when the pipe was being used. Filters, such as Vauen’s Dr Perl or Savinelli’s balsa inserts, reduced heat, moisture, and tars from the smoke before it had even reached the smoker’s mouth. And some companies, like the aforementioned Vauen and Savinelli, combined both the upward-facing button and the filter to provide as cool, dry, and pure a smoke as a briar possibly could.
How could anyone improve on that? Well, one way would be to substitute the briar bowl for meerschaum, which does all of those things, and then to add a both an upward-facing button and a capacity for filters. That’s exactly what this Deluxe is—making for an unbeatably comfortable smoker.
