Description

Design Berlin is, as the name suggests, a German pipe-making company – and is in fact the number two best-selling German pipe make after Vauen. Founded in 1948 as Pfeifenstudio Hartmann by Hubert Hartmann, the company adopted the name Design Berlin and the lowercase ‘db’ logo in 1975 as part of a modernization push.

Here’s a little tidbit about me – one of my first pipes was a Design Berlin. They’re quite unique in today’s market in that they’re not only chambered for 9mm filters, but all of their stems are twin bore – i.e., there are two draft-holes in the end of the stem. It’s a good way to avoid concentrating the smoke on one patch of the mouth, and to cool it slightly. Anyway, this Design Berlin is a fairly traditional quarter-bent bulldog, though the proportions might be said to be ever so slightly Danish. The grain is nice too, with plenty of bird’s-eye and cross grain, accentuated by a light, brown stain.

This Design Berlin pipe is completely unsmoked, with a factory-original bowl coating to help ease in its first smokes. The pipe is chambered for 9mm filters, but will likely be able to accommodate an adapter for non-filter smoking if that’s your preference.
