Joura 7 Smooth Bent Apple Estate Briar Pipe [SOLD OUT]

Out of stock

Description

Karlheinz Joura is a fascinating German pipe-maker, based in the town of Bremen. Along with being a pipe-maker of the same stature as Italy’s Baldo Baldi, or Denmark’s Per Hansen and Ulf Noltensmeier of S. Bang, Joura is a former world-class diver. He’s also perhaps the only master pipe-maker to have successfully crossed the Berlin wall, having defected from Communist East Germany in the 1960s, narrowly escaping its secret police in the process.

Joura’s pipe’s are somewhat difficult to classify. They’re fairly Danish, but more in the style of the earlier, neoclassical Danish pipes made by Sixten Ivarsson in the 1950s, and those of later makers such as Ingo Garbe. They’re shaped freehand (hence the Freihand stamp on Joura pipes), but they’re more subtle and reserved than the term suggests today. This one is a bent apple, but it’s a little more bulbous and organic than the traditional apple. It’s also been shaped to expertly bring out the natural straight grain of the briar around the bowl, as well as the bird’s-eye covering the underside of the pipe.

The condition is fair. There’s some rim charring and handling marks, but this is a small price to pay for getting one’s hands on a highly coveted pipe such as those of Joura.
