Former, Smooth Bent Egg Briar Pipe, Danish Estates (9mm) [SOLD OUT]

Out of stock

Description

It would not be hyperbole to say that Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen is one of the most celebrated and sought after pipe-makers alive today. Beginning his career at Poul Rasmussen’s workshop at the age of 15, Former would soon go on to work with Sven Knudsen, before becoming the foreman at the legendary WO Larsen pipe workshop in Copenhagen, Denmark. From there on, Former’s renown would only continue to grow, and now, after over 60 continuous years as a pipe-maker, Former’s pipes are sold for thousands of dollars apiece.

This particular piece shows why Former’s work continues to be valued so highly. Not only is it immaculately hand-shaped in the style of a classic Danish bent egg, it is dressed in gorgeous flame grain and adorned with silverwork from Former himself. It is expertly drilled and perfectly balanced, as one would expect from such a master, and it is also in mint condition. The stain of the briar still has its luster, the rim is near-flawless, the vulcanite stem shines black and is free from bite-marks, and the stamping is crisp. The previous owner clearly knew how to take care of their valuables.

Whether you’re a collector of Danish masterworks, or simply someone who appreciates the finest high-grade pipes money can buy, this one is not to be missed.
