Ser Jacopo R1 XL Rusticated Apple Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Out of stock

Description

Ser Jacopo is one of the most famous contemporary examples of high-grade, workshop-made Italian pipes. It also belongs to a very special tradition in Italian pipe-making, having been established by Giancarlo Guidi and Bruno Sordini after the two had left another great Italian workshop, Mastro de Paja. Together, Guidi and Sordini created a brand of pipes that reflected their Renaissance sensibilities – even the figurehead of Ser Jacopo happens to be taken from a painting of a nobleman from centuries past – one that would soon become esteemed for creating unique and beautiful tobacco pipes that smoked just as well as they looked.

Rusticated in the quintessential Italian, pebble dash dress, this particular Ser Jacopo is rather a stout pipe (I’m actually a little surprised it isn’t a Maxima grade), but one that also remains faithful to traditional, Anglo-French design. In a way, it calls back to simpler times in the make’s history, back when Giancarlo Guidi’s Ser Jacopo was less set on ostentatious, Renaissance-inspired designs and more on high-grade, handmade smoking instruments. One might even liken it to the pipes Guidi and his fellow craftsmen made at Mastro de Paja—pipes which helped establish Italy as a world-class player in the industry, and indeed birthed a whole school of artisans and workshops in its wake.

The condition is very good. Some rim darkening. It comes with its original box and sleeve.
