Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang. Scandia was a sub-brand for Stanwell in the mid- to late 20th century.

Stanwell’s Scandia sub-brand, as with many of its other sub-brands, often used three-digit shape codes to differentiate the pipes during production, with the first digit indicating which brand the pipe would be sold under. A pipe with a shape code such as this one, therefore, should be understood as a Scandia (“7”) brand iteration of the shape “22.” It’s a seldom-seen shape and a rather difficult one to describe, with a horn side profile, paneled shank, and half-saddle stem. It could even, arguably, be one of the first cobra shapes to have come out of Denmark, though the scarcity of the shape does make establishing a timeline a little fuzzy. It’s certainly not a shape that’s been in Stanwell’s catalog, sub-brand or main-brand, for a good long time, making this an ideal opportunity to acquire one.

The condition is good. Some wear to the rim and a little charring at the back of the rim, chamber slightly over reamed, and some finish fading.
