Description
Morta, also known as bog oak, is a particularly difficult medium to work with. Fossilized over thousands of years in peat bogs, it is expensive to procure due to how labor-intensive harvesting and cutting good quality blocks is, and requires specialized techniques to properly season and carve it. On the other hand, it’s also a particularly good medium for making pipes, in part due to its high density and in part due to its especially neutral taste. In other words, morta can make for a great pipe, so long as it’s in the right hands.
There are plenty of legendary briar artisans. There are far fewer legendary artisans who work with morta. Patrice Sebilo, Trever Talbert, and Reiner Thilo are a few examples. Davorin Denovic is another. A native of Croatia, Denovic is an expert in fossilized woods, having been first introduced to them by a friend and collector. Morta has been his medium of choice as a pipe maker for several decades, the result being a near-unrivaled mastery and recognition of such. This particular pipe is a distinct rendition of the Danish cobra—not the flat faced, “hooded” variations seen in the later 20th century, but rather the much earlier designs sold via Pibe-Dan (later Pipe Dan) in the 1960s. As is common for Davorin’s pipes, the wood itself has merely been waxed and polished, rather than stained, allowing its natural golden hues to take center stage.
This pipe is completely unsmoked with an original (though quite flaked) bowl coating.
