Description

At MBSD we sell a lot of high-grade, high-quality pipes from various iconic makes, but the pipes we’re most proud of are our meerschaums. Right from the beginning, we wanted to offer the best smoking meers on the market, and to do this, we had them made with two distinct features. First, we made sure that they were made with block meerschaum that was carefully selected to be the most lightweight, pure, and porous available, meaning it would also color more quickly and evenly as it is smoked. Second, for our Deluxe meerschaums, we had the pipes made with a patented Briar-Mortise system that is closer to the stem connection on a briar pipe than a standard meerschaum. This is because, on our Deluxe models, the mortise is made from briar itself, while the tenons used are made from Delrin. This allows for more precision construction of the pipe’s draft hole, as well as a general extra durability and longevity.

While many of our meerschaums have been inspired by traditional and modern briar pipe shapes, this is a little different. In fact, it was technically not inspired by briar pipes at all, being instead inspired by a medium that preceded wooden pipes altogether: the humble clay. See, we’ve had a few briars come through recently, from makers as diverse as Charatan, J. Mouton, and Kaywoodie, with each having their own distinct renditions of the kinds of shapes clay pipes used to take, centuries ago. Charatan’s “Newmarket” was one example, J. Mouton’s “Modern Tavern Belge” was another, and Kaywoodie’s “Belgian” was another. All were great designs, so it was only natural that my carver and I wanted to see what a contemporary meerschaum rendition could look like. Rather than create something as slender as a clay, which would have very little by way of bowl capacity and would likely get very hot while in use, we went in the other direction, essentially creating a magnum-sized re-imagining in our favorite mineral.
