Description

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

As with another recent Stanwell listing, the 84R was one of a number of shapes the company debuted in the 1960s, under the collective name “Giants.” One could compare them to the Dunhill OD series, as the Giants were, like the ODs, a mixture of extra large pipes, and fairly large pipes of unusual (in this case, Danish) design. While the 81R we saw recently was a big Lovat, the 84R was a big Canadian. As with the other Giants, the 84R was only available as part of the the high-end Hand Made grade/line and, like many of the Giants, it was removed from Stanwell’s catalogs by the mid-1970s, meaning it was in production for only a relatively short period of time. This one is very nicely grained, with plenty of bird’s-eye around its big bowl. It’s also not nearly as heavy as one would imagine, coming in at around just 50 grams, despite its hefty 7 inches of total length.

The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and minor handling marks.
