Description
The MBSD Meerschaum Silver is our line of silver mounted meerschaum pipes. Using the same high-grade, fast-coloring Turkish meerschaum found on our Deluxe series, these pipes exclusively feature silver army mounts or spigot mounts.
Back in the 1970s, there was something of a revival of European meerschaum carving. But this time, it was a little different. There were several factors involved in this. One was that Turkey had set about banning the export of raw block meerschaum. European carvers, most notably Laxey in the British Isles, turned instead to African block meerschaum, from Tanzania, which had been used in centuries prior, but had succeeded over time by the Turkish variety. Laxey’s pipes were successful enough that a significant number of established makes, including Peterson, Nording, and Barling (in its post-transition era), had meerschaum pipes made for them by the Laxey company. Then, after Tanzania stopped mining meerschaum altogether, this craze came to an abrupt end. These days, people treasure those Laxey-made pipes, and I’ve made no secret that I myself have a deep fondness for the aesthetics of African block meerschaum. For this design, it is those Laxey pipes (along with other African meers of the time) that were a principal influence, hence the pipe’s simple bent apple physique, sterling silver mount, and simple black saddle stem. The pipe was made in Turkey from Turkish meerschaum, but finished as if it was African, giving a kind of “best of both worlds.” It also features a reverse calabash system for keeping things extra cool and dry.
