Description
MBSD Meerschaum Masters is our line for special, typically figural, meerschaum pipes carved by some of today’s greatest living meerschaum carvers. For this pipe, we enlisted the services of Turkish master Karahan.
Eskişehir’s master Ayhan Karahan is well known not only for his skills as a meerschaum carver, but for his affinity for the Austrian schools of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Vienna was once a powerhouse of meerschaum carving, rivaling even Turkey in its elevation of the practice into a genuine art form. Like several of the other Karahan pieces we’ve listed recently, this one features a woodland scene highly reminiscent of those found in late 19th and early 20th century meerschaum designs, and one of Karahan’s own signature designs: a meticulously sculpted, miniature bear resting its paws against a tree branch, with the latter comprising the pipe’s bowl. Leaning further into the Viennese tradition, the pipe features an amber-toned acrylic stem.
