Description
I’ve always said that, of all the pipes we sell, I’m proudest of our meerschaum pipes. Enlisting the finest carvers from Türkiye’s meerschaum powerhouse Eskişehir, and working solely with high-grade meerschaum blocks, MBSD Meerschaum has been even more successful than even I—captivated as I was with my initial “pipe dream”—had imagined. But in the years since there has been a project in the back of my mind that I have not had the chance to realize: a collaboration between “East” and “West,” so to speak. While Türkiye has the world’s best meerschaum carvers, the world’s best stem cutters are found in a more global community, one whose primary medium is not meerschaum, but briar. This is the essence of the MBSD Meerschaum Premier: combining high-grade, Turkish meerschaum bowls with equally high-grade, hand-cut ebonite stems.
For the first run of the MBSD Premier, we enlisted American artisan J. Mouton to cut the stems required for these special meerschaums. Given the success of that run, we’ve been aiming to continue offering MBSD Meerschaum pipes with ebonite stems, by way of partnerships with more of our friends in the artisan pipe community. For this latest batch, we asked another great American artisan and personal friend of ours, Tim Beaumont, if he would do the honors. Given Beaumont’s recent, very popular Danish-inspired shapes, it’s very fitting that this was one of the Premier meerschaums he helped create. It’s a lightweight, 3/4 egg of sorts, inspired by the “swan” shapes of Sven Knudsen and Hans Former Nielsen, for which Beaumont has hand-cut a cumberland stem from high-grade cumberland rod. As the Premier is an offshoot of our MBSD Deluxe Meerschaum pipes, this one also features our patented Briar-Mortise system, making sure that the stem stays secure and that the join has extra longevity.
Please note that this pipe comes with both an acrylic and a hand-cut cumberland stem.
