Description

The idea of having house-brand briar pipes is something all of us at MBSD Pipes had in the backs of our minds for a long time. After all, we have our own brand of meerschaums, so why not briars, too? We knew the project could take many forms and, ultimately, we settled on starting out with a line of pipes whose designs were strongly influenced by contemporary artisan briars, while also being eminently affordable.

To accomplish this, we teamed up with Italian artisan Piero Vitale, along with Paolo and Gianni Croci’s Talamona factory. Vitale’s connections allowed him to source seasoned, pre-turned briar stummels from northern Italy’s historic pipe making campuses. From this foundation, he created three shapes: a Danish billiard, an Italian author, and a traditional, Anglo-French bent brandy. Each shape would be fitted with an exotic wood ferrule and a specially-cut, beaded black Lucite stem, whose tenon fits directly into the draft hole of the briar. Thanks to the Croci brothers’ expert craftsmen and Vitale’s oversight through every step of the production process, the first iteration of MBSD Briars was born.

MBSD Briars are available in the following finishes:

• Sienna Contrast, a smooth polished, two-tone finish inspired by one of the staple pigments of Italian renaissance painting.
• Red Sandblasted, a relief finish inspired by ancient Roman terracotta ceramics.
• Black Sandblasted, a relief finish with a more classical, black dress stain.
• Vintage Sandblasted, a deeper, bolder variant of the Red and Black Sandblasted relief finishes, intended to mirror the craggy textures of early 20^th century pipes.
• Black Rusticated, a hand-carved finish inspired by the historic rock formations of Italy’s volcanic regions.
