Description

Chacom is one of France’s most historic and iconic makes. Its founders, the Comoy family, began their career as boxwood pipe-makers in the early 1800s, before briar had even been discovered, with Henri Comoy (of Comoy’s fame) emigrating to England in 1879 and founding the country’s first briar pipe factory. In 1922, Henri and his nephews, the Chapuis, founded the Chapuis Comoy pipe factory in Saint-Claude, France, which shortly after began producing pipes bearing the partnered families’ names – ‘Cha’ for Chapuis, and ‘Com’ for Comoy. Chacom has been the biggest name in French pipes ever since.

Now this is a high-grade Chacom if I ever did see one (and I have indeed seen several). While no longer in production, the Corona seems to have been a series composed entirely of pipes with excellent grain, a natural stain to show off said grain, and a hand-cut, amber-toned acrylic stem, separated from the shank by two brass bands. I would call the grain ‘stellar,’ but I think ‘solar’ might be more appropriate, as the pipe’s strawberry blonde finish makes the straight grain lapping up over the bowl absolutely shine. On the pipe’s underside, these patterns transform into a sea of bird’s-eyes. It is pure eye candy.

What’s more, the pipe is completely unsmoked and comes with its original box and sock. While it comes with a stinger, as with most Chacom pipes, this stinger is easily unscrewed and removed for those who prefer to smoke without one.
