Ben Wade 72, Sandblasted Lumberman Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Ben Wade was founded, as might be expected, by Leeds-based English pipe merchant Benjamin Wade in 1860. Soon after, Wade opened his own workshop to produce quintessentially British pipes. As one of the first makes to create pipes from briar, Ben Wade has a special place in pipe history, one only made more special by the famously high-quality of their output.

Judging by the nomenclature and the craggy sandblast, this looks to be a Ben Wade produced during the time when Lane Ltd owned the company, and produced Ben Wade pipes at the Charatan Premises. It’s a fairly large lumberman design, though I wouldn’t call it overly heavy, which indicates that it was made from good briar.

I think this might be the first Ben Wade I’ve encountered that was completely unsmoked, which is always nice to see. It has a bowl coating from the factory, which will help ease in its first smokes for the next owner.
