Kaywoodie Standard 73S Smooth XL Canadian Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates

Description

Kaywoodie pipes are as American as apple pie. Starting in 1919 as a pipe brand for KB&B, a pipe shop dating all the way back to 1851, Kaywoodie has since then been a staple of American-made pipes. In the present, many Kaywoodies are collectors’ items, in addition to being fantastic smokers.

While Kaywoodie offered Canadian shapes more or less from the beginnings of the make, the 73S was a separate design, inaugurated in the mid-century. It was, per Kaywoodie’s marketing, an “Extra Large Canadian.” Still remaining faithful to classical Anglo-French proportions, the 73S was more of a distinctively long Canadian, closer to a Comoy’s Extraordinaire or a Sasieni Canadian model than, say, a magnum. This made the pipe far more manageable despite its length, with the one seen here being less than 45 grams despite being over 6.5 inches long. This Standard grade 73S is an especially beautiful specimen, with the flanks of its bowl alive with bird’s-eye grain patterns. As this is a pre-1970 Kaywoodie, it features the make’s famous Drinkess stinger and Synchro-Stem threaded fitment.

The condition is fair. A few small, cosmetic scratches around the bowl and rim and some minor inner rim charring.
