Description
Bari was a pipe company founded in Kolding, Denmark, in 1950. Along with Stanwell, Bari was one of the first companies that started the Danish movement in pipe-making, offering innovative designs and propelling its founders and carvers into celebrity status within the pipe world. Bari’s founder was Viggo Nielsen, whose sons Kai Nielsen and Jørgen Nielsen joined him in working at Bari, along with other soon-to-be famous names such as Åge Bogelund. Though the Bari company is long gone, its legacy lives on in the artisan pipe scene as it exists today.
In an era defined by an explosion of freehand pipes, Bari was one of the few workshops to stand out with its pipes in that genre, thanks in no small part to interesting, recognizable design elements. One of these elements was the use of faceted sections on the bowl and shank, and another was in stem design, which incorporated rings, panels, and inlays, laying the groundwork for the modern split stem. If you look at Age Bogelund’s solo work, for example, you can see his influence reflected in the output of the Bari workshop, who was its chief pipe maker. When I look at this Special-grade Bari freehand, for example, I can see Bogelund’s distinct aesthetics all over it, and that’s before we even get to its beautiful flame grain.
The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening.
