Description

It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously produced high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

The Luxor is a line that Savinelli has not produced for several years. I would guess that this is because the bulk of Savinelli’s contemporary pipes are either smooth or rusticated, with sandblasting reserved for their highest grade and limited edition pipes. A related reason is that Savinelli rarely uses vulcanite for stems anymore, preferring typically Italian lucite. The Luxor was offered in either smooth or sandlasted finishes, though the latter – as seen on this pipe – could also have smooth rims. It also had vulcanite stems, as this one does. It’s a very classy design, with the dark, Merlot stain and the black vulcanite broken up by three rings of what appears to be brass.

There are some minor handling marks on the bowl, and the finish on the rim is a little worn, but these are only superficial imperfections. If you like Savinellis, but prefer the softer bite of vulcanite and the tactile feel of sandblasting, this could be perfect for you. It’s chambered for 6mm filters, such as Savinelli’s balsa filters, but will smoke just as well without one.
