Eric Klodt Sandblasted Bent Author Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates [SOLD OUT]

Description

Eric Klodt is an American artisan pipe-maker, who became immersed in the world of high-grade pipes in 2009. After studying with key figures in the contemporary American artisan movement, such as Rad Davis, Grant Batson, Nate King, and Michael Lindner, Klodt began producing his own high-grade smoking pipes, each inflected with the skills passed down by time spent with his celebrated tutors.

This bent apple from Klodt, carved much like the traditional ‘author’ shape, is an interesting example of the American style. It is decidedly more robust and muscular than classical authors, and the steep angle of departure for its shank and stem is almost reminiscent of another shape, the hawkbill. Either way, it’s extremely well crafted, with a nice crisp blast highlighting the briar’s natural ring grain in a way that is particularly difficult on squat bowls such as the author’s. I’m particularly fond of the neo-classical approach found in the contemporary American movement, and this Klodt is no exception.
