Sean Reum Pipes, High Contrast Eggshell Acorn Handmade Estate Briar Pipe, 9mm, American Estates [SOLD OUT]

Description

Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.

This particular pipe is an example of why I love Reum’s work. It takes a design motif from the rich history of artisan pipe-making – in this case, the wide ‘acorn’ or ‘mushroom’ Dublin shapes found in the pipes of Nanna Ivarsson or the Tsuge Ikebana workshop – and adds little things that turn the pipe into something fresh and new. The most obvious addition here is the ‘foot’ at the base of the pipe, something ordinarily reserved for cutty shapes, but there’s also something else that sets this one apart from its spiritual forebears. While the pipe may look to be completely smooth, upon closer inspection it is apparent that the pipe is very lightly sandblasted in Reum’s own special ‘eggshell’ finish. This allows the high contrast staining of the stummel to really stand out, making the pipe look and feel fantastic. This is paired with a hand cut camo-green style ebonite stem that finishes the pipe’s aesthetic off nicely.

On a final note, this pipe is chambered for a 9mm filter. It can also be smoked without a filter and will accommodate a non-filter adapter, which MBSD will provide if the buyer asks for one.
