At MBSD we sell a lot of high-grade, high-quality pipes from various iconic makes, but the pipes we’re most proud of are our meerschaums. Right from the beginning, we wanted to offer the best smoking meers on the market, and to do this, we had them made with two distinct features. First, we made sure that they were made with block meerschaum that was carefully selected to be the most lightweight, pure, and porous available, meaning it would also color more quickly and evenly as it is smoked. Second, for our Deluxe meerschaums, we had the pipes made with a patented Briar-Mortise system that is closer to the stem connection on a briar pipe than a standard meerschaum. This is because, on our Deluxe models, the mortise is made from briar itself, while the tenons used are made from Delrin. This allows for more precision construction of the pipe’s draft hole, as well as a general extra durability and longevity.

This particular Deluxe pays homage to a strange, yet fascinating genre of designs, one that blends two shapes that one would not expect to come together: the blowfish, and the sitter. Most pipe smokers know what a blowfish should look like, and a sitter shape is—while broad—very much intuitive. At first they would seem at odds, given the way blowfishes and sitter shapes have typically been rendered. Yet such hybrids do exist, and where else would one find such boundary-pushing creations than Japan? Whether it is Takeo Arita, Ichi Kitahara, or Hiroyuki Tokutomi, it has been shown time and again that one can make the blowfish sit without mortally wounding it. This rendition pays homage to the Japanese greats in that regard, incorporating a similarly Japanese sense of asymmetry, while also ending up as something very much unto its own.
