Description
Pioneer was a brand of meerschaum pipes sold by Wally Frank. Wally Frank was a historic American tobacconist, which had its house-brand pipes produced by numerous established makes. Pioneer pipes have also been associated with Manx, a meerschaum company based on the Isle of Man in the UK, who also made Peterson and Barling meerschaums.
It’s likely that this meerschaum, for example, was made by Manx, given that it feels like African meerschaum, rather than Turkish. It’s a nice pipe, too, with the shaping of an old Anglo-French, vulcanite army mount bulldog, and the clean-smoking properties of sepiolite.
The condition is good. Some finish fading and a few superficial scratches around the bowl.
