Description

GBD was one of several prominent examples of a French pipe brand that, due to certain circumstances, became a maker most associated with classic ‘British’ pipes. Founded in 1850 by the French trio Ganneval, Bondier & Donninger, the brand was bought by English company Oppenheimer at the beginning of the 20th century, who opened factories in London and Paris to meet an increasing demand for the make’s high-quality and highly desirable pipes. Partly owing to the make’s inventive, yet traditional shapes, and partly due to the high standards of their production, GBD pipes are particularly coveted by collectors, as well as those who simply appreciate classic, well-made smoking instruments.

This is a somewhat unconventional take on the bent bulldog shape, in that the shank remains straight while the stem does not, allowing the bowl to ‘hang’ from the mouth rather than curve back upwards. It’s very old fashioned, but in a classic, traditionalist way. The rest of the design is impeccably executed, with the proportions of the bowl and shank being just right, and the beveled rim adding an extra touch of je ne sais quoi (if you’ll pardon my French). The color is great too, with its orange-red stain allowing the briar’s natural patterns to swirl around the bowl.

The condition is near-mint. It hardly seems smoked at all to my eyes. What’s more, if my estimation is correct, this GBD was made before GBD was fully absorbed by Cadogan Investments, which is always a bonus for those looking for something a little more special.
