American Smoking Pipe Co. Smooth Poker Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates [SOLD OUT]

Description

The American Smoking Pipe Company was founded in 1978 by artisans Mark Tinsky and Curt Rollar. Tinsky and Rollar’s venture was part of a new wave of North American hand made pipe making that emerged in the 1970s and ’80s, including artisan carvers such as Mike Butera, Tim West, Elliot Nachtwalter and Jorg Jemelka. Despite the name, American Smoking Pipe Co. was not a factory or large scale operation, but a simple pipe workshop and name shared between friends. Rollar departed the company in 1990, after which Tinsky remained at the reins into the 2000s, before selling his pipes under his own name.

Like Nachtwalter & Jemelka’s Briar Workshop, American Pipe Co. consistently put out high-grade, American-made smoking pipes, but the latter tended to be more traditional in their designs. It’s hard to think of a more traditionally American pipe than the humble poker we have here. A simple, sturdy sitter with a deep bowl and thick walls, this pipe is a high-grade take on a classic. With plenty of flame grain and a golden brown stain to show it off, this is one pipe that won’t let you down in the looks or the functionality department.

As the pipe is several decades old at this point, it does have a few handling marks around the bowl, and some of the stamping is quite faint (though one can make out that it was crafted by Curt Rollar). The stem had a few deep tooth impressions when we received it, so in addition to refurbishing the pipe, we had the stem professionally restored by Briarville.
