Description

J&J Pipes were made for a short time in the 2010s, by Californian (USA) artisan pipe-makers John Klose and Jared Coles. Tutored by the legendary Jeff Gracik of J. Alan Pipes, Klose and Coles collaborated to make J&J Pipes before each going their separate ways in 2015. Influenced by Danish, Japanese, and English pipe-making traditions, J&J pipes were sometimes quite traditional, and at other times were experimental and avant-garde in styling – but they were always expertly made, high grade pipes, a quality that continues today in the solo work of Klose and Coles.

This particular pipe is an interpretation of the iconic ‘blowfish’ design that emerged from the Danish artisan movement of the mid-20th century. Normally this kind of pipe would be sandblasted or partially sandblasted, but Klose and Cole took a different approach with this one by partially rusticating it instead, leaving small patches of smooth grain, such as the lone ridge flowing from the rim to the end of the shank. The result, funnily enough, is that the sides of the pipe almost look like dense schools of fish swimming around the bowl. I’ve not seen this done before, but I’d say it’s quite fitting. If I’m not mistaken, the pipe also seems to have a pretty, exotic wood accent around the end of the shank, adding a little something extra to the overall design.

Overall, a wonderful pipe, and one that isn’t too large or heavy either. I’ve always loved how it looks to clench a blowfish. I’m sure you will too.
