Description
While meerschaum carving is essentially a sculptural art with functional properties, the subject of this art is usually confined to a few, time-honored motifs. Busts of archetypes, such as the nobleman or the buccaneer, for example; animal heads and scenes; and slightly more gothic entities, such as skulls, or claws. This meerschaum, by an unknown (though clearly very talented) carver instead takes as its subject an item that is comparatively far more modern, though also a little retro in relation to our contemporary world. In a move more than a little evocative of Dunhill and its 1981 tribute to radio disc jockey Dave Lee Travis, this meerschaum has been carved in the form of a mid-century microphone, like the Shure 55.
