HS Studio Sandblasted Squat Bulldog w/ Boxwood Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked
Out of stock
Description
If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.
Though HS Studio largely creates “Danish” style pipes of all stripes, I have noticed that the workshop is by no means averse to more “traditional” designs. This one, for example is very traditional, taking the form of a sleek, squat bulldog, reminiscent of Anglo-French shapes at the turn of the 20th century. As an extra classical touch, it is not only dressed in a dark sandblast and fitted with a black ebonite stem, but also features a stem inlay from what I think is boxwood, but which rather evokes another, more old fashioned off-white material, one that is no longer used in pipe design (at least, not the kind harvested from sources that are only recently deceased).
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
