Description
In 1974, after growing impatient waiting for a pipe he’d ordered, Claudio Cavicchi decided he would simply make his own pipe instead. The former farmer from Bologna, Italy, spent the next 15 years making pipes, until his work took off and received widespread acclaim. Cavicchi’s pipe-making exploits have only become more renowned in the decades since. Today, Cavicchi’s pipes hold a firm place at the top of an extraordinarily competitive Italian high-grades scene, being as carefully and meticulously crafted as they are beautiful. With this in mind, it should come as no surprise that Claudio himself is a world record holding slow smoking champion.
There’s an old idiom that goes along the lines of “X walked so Y could run.” Claudio Cavicchi runs, though his ability to carve the most magnificent pipes in just about every style imaginable makes finding one specific “X” in this scenario rather difficult. This broad, plateaux-topped Dublin has antecedents in Italian pipe making, especially in the early “Pesaro School” inaugurated by Mastro de Paja, but there’s also perhaps a little bit of Charatan in there—during its best years, of course, and at its highest grades. It’s little wonder why this pipe received a full five “C”s out of five (after which one only finds the seldom-seen “Perla,” and the borderline-mythical “Diamante” grades), though if just about anyone else had made it, it would be cause to re-organize their grading scheme altogether.
This pipe is completely unsmoked.
